Via Great Britain

The shortest way to Ireland runs across the British mainland, and the crossings there are short and frequent. Holyhead - Dublin in Wales is the main axis, while Pembroke and Fishguard serve Rosslare in the south-east of Ireland. All three require the drive through England and Wales.

Northern Ireland is reached from Scotland and from Liverpool. Cairnryan is on the shortest route from Glasgow; Liverpool is the overnight boat from northern England.

Direct from the Continent

The direct ferries bypass Great Britain entirely: no second border, no drive across the island, but considerably longer crossings. Cherbourg serves Dublin and Rosslare, Roscoff sails to Cork and Dunkirk to Rosslare. From Spain there is Bilbao - Rosslare.

What to watch out for in the timetable

The short routes via Wales sail several times a day; the direct ferries from the Continent only on certain weekdays. With the direct boats the timetable therefore often decides the travel date rather than the other way round. Set your date above and check the neighbouring days too.

The direct ferries are overnight crossings and long ones. In high season cabins go before vehicle spaces do, and a crossing of that length without a cabin is no pleasure.

The timetable shows the planned departures. What is binding is the sailing in your booking confirmation; check it again with the operator on the day you travel.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ - Ireland ferry timetable

Questions about departure times and seasonal ferry services to Ireland.

How often do ferries sail to Ireland? +

It depends on the route, season and day of the week. Irish Sea routes generally sail more frequently than the long direct crossings from mainland Europe; seasonal routes may not operate at all for part of the year. Select your date above. The operator confirms the final departure.

Do ferry times change with the season? +

Yes. Timetables change with the operating season, day of the week, vessel and weather. The operator's message and your booking confirmation are authoritative.

What do the ferries in the timetable cost? +

The price depends on the date, vehicle, passengers, cabin and fare type. The price guide explains how to make a full comparison; the booking window on the route page shows the final price.
